PicturePincha Mayurasana - Ashtanga Intermediate Series (film image by Caitlin's Living Photography)
This post is dedicated to the faithful Ashtanga yogis who came to LPS Strength & Meditation each Wednesday evening with open minds, a willing heart and a sense of humor to practice jumps backs, jump throughs and handstands, mostly within the Ashtanga Primary Series with a little bit of Second and Third Series sprinkled in now and then for fun!

I thank them for spending their yoga class time with me (through my first and second trimesters!) from July until this past Wednesday, Nov. 30, when our last class of the year was held. I hope to bring it back sometime next year, after my sweet bundle of joy enters the world (due date April 1), and after I return to my beloved Ashtanga practice. For now, there are brighter, bigger things to focus on than jumps backs, ujayi breath, deep forward folds and deep backbends, and that miraculous thing is cultivating a yoga practice that supports my growing baby!

I especially thank each student as they remained flexible (no pun intended!) and understanding as I first changed the class from Hot Ashtanga Mix to an unheated class (heat + pregnant = no good) and then decreased it from a 90 minute class to one hour to accommodate my pregnancy. I am grateful for your support and even more so for the much-needed smiles and warmth you brought me through your energy and presence in class.

Because I hope that you continue your Ashtanga journey, I've compiled a list of resources that helped me develop my personal home Ashtanga practice over the years.

Many more resources exist! I only listed the ones with which I have personal experience. For instance, any DVD by Kino MacGregor would be worthwhile, or anything by David Swenson.

Other teachers I enjoy are Jodi Blumstein and Mary Taylor from yogaglo.com. Also, if you ever find yourself in Carlsbad, Calif. (north San Diego County), make a special trip to Tim Miller's studio, Ashtanga Yoga Center. I had the great pleasure of enjoying some of his classes while living in southern California some years ago and hope to attend a workshop by him (he was recently in Pittsburgh) one day, maybe next year!

If California is way out of reach, Pittsburgh has an Ashtanga studio. Though I have never been there and can't tell you anything about it, it's called The Shala and is the region's only dedicated Ashtanga yoga studio. Perhaps a yoga road trip to the city is in your near future! Let me know how it goes :)

If you have any questions or care to share your Ashtanga journey, please post a comment!

P.S. Today I enter the sixth month of pregnancy (week 23) - woowoo! And it's my 34th birthday! Cheers!
